During Maths Week we started creating some illusion art.

REAL TIME - Week 2

This term we have started REAL Time on a Friday.

Blokarts!

For our term three inquiry we looked at the power of wind.
At the end of our learning we sorted ourselves into small groups to plan and design our own blokarts.
We had to test our designs and make changes to make them work better.
On the last day of term we had a race.

                             

Year 6 Ski Trip

On Monday 10th of September most of the year six children went on a ski trip to Porters Ski Field.

We had the option to do skiing or snowboarding,
most of the year us chose to do skiing.
Some of the parents joined in to learn to ski or snowboard as well.

When you did skiing you got put through three beginner levels and they
taught you to...

1.Put your skis on

2. Learn how to stop

3. Learn how to turn.

When you finished those three levels you could go off to the intermediate
slope which was steeper and longer than the beginners.

To get up to the intermediate slope you had to hold onto a pomer.
A pomer is like a flying fox but you don't sit on it, you hold onto it and it pulls
you up the mountain.

If you did snowboarding you would practice clipping and unclipping your
snowboard on and off. Then you headed half way up the intermediate slope
and sat down to clip in your snowboard.

One at a time you'd stand up and go down facing forward learning how to
stop and start. Once you reached the bottom you'd head halfway up again
and finish the lesson.

Mason Matthews

Chess!

Congratulation to Finn, Harry, Zodie and Riley Sc who are members of the
Waitākiri A Chess team.  

They recently competed at the Canterbury tournament and won.
This meant they get to compete at the nationals in Mount Maunganui.

The boys have also worked very hard to fundraising to pay for their flights and
accommodation.They held a black and white mufti day, a pie fundraiser and guess how many chess pieces are in the pot.

This is a really good opportunity for them. They also went to Ashburton where they came 2nd out of all of the South Island.

Cantamath 2018

Christchurch Individual Problem Solving Cantamath Display Competition

This involved choosing one of four problems and independently working on a solution.

Children had to write up their working clearly and include any calculations they made and what they had discovered. They then had to present this in either a booklet or poster format and include any models they created while working on the solution.

Once they had completed them they were taken to the Horncastle Arena and marked.

The highest mark able to be given out was an Excellence award and then after that was Highly Commended. Brooklyn, Ollie, Jake, Ihaka, Zoe, Finn, Daisy, and Aahneya received Highly Commended and Lucas, Ben and Gemma received an Excellence award.
